The new norm…

Happy International Women’s Day.

As I type that, I do find it odd. Huh?! Let me explain…

I say that as I’ve always felt the equality throughout my life.

It might start with my father and late uncle teaching me the necessary etiquette and mannerisms when respecting women at a very early age. But I feel that those teachings came to life from four who I’m very fortunate to have in my life.

Having being raised by a wonderfully strong, loving mother, I was taught what it meant to respect and care for women.

My cheeky, highly intelligent sister, keeping me sane since she came into our lives, teaching me the value of how to balance my views and be fully inclusive.

Being married to a more than equal partner-in-life, my fantastic wife for many years, who has shown me the powerful, positive effect of collaboration, something I always attempt to weave in my personal and professional life.

And not forgetting my incredible daughter who, like my two sons, remain my motivation, inspiration, and joy to each and every day we are privileged to live on this fragile world.

I’m not naive.  I absolutely recognise the many challenges women have had to overcome. But this post is to recognise all those women who empowered women to greater things and men to supporting them and giving them opportunities.

This post is more to look forward to the day when this becomes the new norm. The new norm when women can truly focus on their dreams and aspirations, without discrimination, to not be preoccupied with issues that might relate to their gender.

So, again, wishing everyone International Women’s Day, in the hope this becomes the new norm and this equality will realise new outcomes, successes and achievements.

Believe the glass is always (more than) half full…

In support of Mental Health Awareness…

Your heart feels like giving in…
You feel you cannot breathe,
You look around in desperation…
Your mind and soul want to grieve.

But such is the human spirit…
That deep down will keep you going,
That will guide you to hope eternal…
To prevent you from further falling.

Indeed, the (community) human spirit prevails…
Strength and support, ready and waiting,
Shining a light when it gets darkest…
Driving you to keep on staying…

To the new path that awaits you…
The next chapter of your journey,
Where you will overcome yet again…
Challenges of past and negativity.

So be patient, take your time…
Let it happen, let it flow…
Leave behind the stress and tension…
Life will move on, albeit at first slow…

And then it starts, then you smile…
Wondering what the fuss was all about…
T’was just another milestone to pass…
Learning a life lesson to get out.

Where, again, all is appreciated…
All is good and peaceful again,
Taking everything into perspective…
Realising life is very much worthwhile, Amen.

Why Good Leaders Make You Feel Safe …

For those who don’t know Simon Sinek, he is a business visionary and Management Theorist.  Whilst this video was posted up on Ted back in March 2014, it has a timeless message.  Best part for me is about 10 minutes in, and I quote:

Leadership is a choice. It is not a rank. I know many people at the senior most levels of organizations who are absolutely not leaders. They are authorities, and we do what they say because they have authority over us, but we would not follow them. And I know many people who are at the bottoms of organizations who have no authority and they are absolutely leaders, and this is because they have chosen to look after the person to the left of them, and they have chosen to look after the person to the right of them. This is what a leader is.”

Here is the video.  Enjoy!
